Week 4 & 5

Week 4 & 5 were pretty neat.

I was late meeting up one morning to see the new courthouse construction to take pictures. I went to the old courthouse instead of the new courthouse. By the time I got to the office trailer for the construction company to meet up my sponsor and fellow intern were just getting done. To make up for coming downtown to take pictures of the new courthouse construction, I spent my time walking around downtown in order to get some stock photography and unique shots.

That weekend, I had an assignment to take photos at a Block Party hosted by the Ritz Theater.

The Ritz Theater primarily hosts great talent from African-Americans around the country. To celebrate their 10 year anniversary the Ritz an indoor/outdoor event was held. There was live music outside with musicians from around the country: R & B singers, percussion musicians. There were also vendors showcasing traditional African garments for sale and even contemporary African-American artists showcasing their artwork as well.

Plus there was an art exhibit that had traditional African garments from different regions of Africa and their significance. The other half of the exhibit showed how African Americans lived about 2 to 3 generations ago: churches, barber shops, school houses, etc. The exhibit kept going and going it was amazing!

The music was great! An elderly woman undoubtedly in her upper 60's was cutting a rug when DJ Dr. Doom was playing some old school funk music. She was brought up on stage and the crowd went wild. My mom and dad were there enjoying themselves along with my aunt and uncle. It was simply a good time and plus IT WAS FREE!

week 3

I came in and
(re)learned a little more about Lightroom on how to edit all my pictures the same way as I uploaded them.
I was also given a list on a LOT of different stock photography options: taking pictures around town, nice neighborhoods.

I showed my sponsor pictures from a wedding the weekend before. It was a kick in the office... more like a punch of a mini-cake from the groom into the bride's face.

week 2 of my internship

Week 2 was my first assignment in the field.

I came to city hall. My sponsor, one of the photographers for the city, was on vacation. However, another photographer was present and was working with a parks director. I was given an assignment to do 'stock photography'. Stock photography is used for the purpose of covering stories and having images relevant to that story instead of attaining certain photographs through other means (paying for stock images).

The parks director and the photographer were working on a story that relates to how water in retention ponds or other bodies of water in city parks use recycled water. My assignment was to get stock photography at any city park and get pictures of ponds or any body of water.

I went to Blue Cypress park that is not too far from my house. It was an overcast day which was perfect for me taking pictures. However, it was awfully humid that day as well.

I returned to city hall a couple of days later, edited the photographs, and turned them in.

The photographer who sent me out on the assignment commended me and let my sponsor know that I did an excellent job.

NEW INTERNSHIP

NEW INTERNSHIP

By rtp904

My new internship is pretty awesome. I’m an intern for the City of Jacksonville working with the Photographer for the city. I have a computer and desk set up in City Hall! It’s pretty surreal yet well deserved at the same time.

The photographer for the city goes to my church. We’re both on the photography team. I got the ‘divine hook up’ ;)

My first job was taking pictures at the Enviromental Department meeting. They discussed the budget and I took pictures. I wasn’t really there for the meeting but Jeannie Blaylock from the local news came in mid-meeting. Now mind you, in this meeting room there was a string of dollars all around the room. This was money raised for breast cancer. The total was $1100 dollars!! When Jeannie came in and was announced all of the city workers held up the dollars collected and it was a neat moment. I’m snapping away as this happened.

Jeannie Blaylock is an advocate for Breast Cancer Prevention and discussed something called Buddy Check 12 (12 for the local channel that she broadcasts for). She played 2 videos that gave Breast Cancer awareness. One was a touching video that just reminds you of the women in your life that you love.

The other video was sad. A woman found a lump the size of a marble (probably smaller). But, because she was so busy maintaining her family she never told a soul, not even her husband. She went to bed after the lights were off and changed in the dark as well. Months went by and her breast cancer became malilgnant. There was a graphic section of the video that showed the woman breast and it was horrific. It was overall very sad and the family was in mourning. Ultimately, this video made you think of the women in your life that you love in a way that urges you to promote awareness.

My contact and I then walked down a couple of blocks downtown to another building where the city workers actually work. They have a milk jug decorated in pink party streamers with eyes to make it look like a pig. A slit was cut in the top so it is a pink piggy bank that was for Breast Cancer Awareness Donations.

I went back to my desk. Uploaded the images. Edited the all in Photoshop. Burn them to a disc. My sponsor came in at that point coming back from a similar job out at Cecil Field. Gave him the disc. Filled out my time sheet and left to meet my buddy Eli for a business lunch to discuss starting a blog.

So here I am.

This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship with you.

Have a good one.

Reg.
